<br />/' <br /> <br /> <br />7 <br /> <br />'- <br /> <br />pLEASANTONc <br /> <br />City Council <br />Informational Report <br /> <br />January 16,2007 <br />Parks and Community Services <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />INFORMATIONAL REPORT REGARDING RESIDENT REQUEST <br />TO BAN SMOKING IN CITY PARKS <br /> <br />PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: <br /> <br />That the City Council direct staff to: (1) actively promote the requirements <br />of California Health and Safety Code 104495; and, (2) develop policies, <br />procedures, and/or guidelines allowing the City Manager to ban smoking in <br />designated areas, if necessary, for the purpose of the public's health and <br />safety. <br /> <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: <br /> <br />Staff concurs with the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation <br />Commission. <br /> <br />SUMMARY: <br /> <br />At a May 2006 Council Meeting, a resident expressed concern regarding <br />smoking in City parks. The City Council requested that the Parks and <br />Recreation Commission consider the matter, and forward its findings or <br />recommendations to the Council. <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council: <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />At the City Council meeting of May 2, 2006, a resident spoke during "Meeting Open to the <br />Public" and raised a concern regarding smoking in City parks. The specific items mentioned <br />were litter from cigarette butts and the potential for fire danger. The City Council requested that <br />the Parks and Recreation Commission discuss this matter and forward its findings. <br />
