Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council: BACKGROUND On June 20, 2006, the City Council awarded the construction contract to Granite Construction Company, Inc. of Santa Clara, in the amount of $544,660 with a $54,466 (10 %) contingency. The project consisted of removing reinforced concrete circles and approach islands (roundabouts) and included widening the roadway along the north edge of Vineyard Avenue by approximately 18 feet between the Thiessen Street (East and West) loop. The approximate length of roadway improvements is 1,900 feet. The final roadway width generally consists of two 6-foot bike lanes, two 12-foot travel lanes, and a 12-14 foot left turn pocket/acceleration lane. In this reconstructed area, the roadway width and transitions taper to accommodate vehicles turning onto Vineyard Avenue from the side streets. Conventional tee intersections were constructed at Thiessen Street (East and West). The construction improvements maintain the southerly edge of roadway pavement and increased the roadway width to the north, retaining a 16-foot buffer between the north edge of pavement and the Lonestar property fence line to accommodate a pedestrian trail and landscaping along the fence line. Underground conduits were installed at the intersection of Vineyard Avenue and Thiessen Street (West and East) to accommodate a future traffic signal(s) if necessary, to accommodate future development in the area.
