added an Alternate member to the Committee, which would allow the appointee to learn how the
Committee operates and understand trails issues prior to being considered for regular
appointment.

In May 2006, staff began the recruitment process with ads in the Pleasanton Weekly and on the
City's website. By the original June 16 deadline, only one (I) application had been received.
The recruitment was extended to June 30, and ads were placed in the other area newspapers.
This resulted in II additional applications being received.

At the June 8, 2006 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, Chairperson Jerry Pentin and
Commissioner Kathy Narum were appointed to serve as a Selection Subcommittee to review
Trails Ad Hoc Committee applications, interview candidates, and provide recommendations to
the full Commission.

The Selection Subcommittee established the following criteria to assist in evaluating each of the
candidates:

· Applicant's reason for wishing to serve on the Committee, and what they hoped to
accomplish during the three (3) year term;
· Ability to devote time to Committee meetings and related tasks, including interaction
with the community;
· Level and type of interest in trails, and amount of experience with trail-related issues;
· Experience with trails-related groups, City commissions, and committees; and
· Awareness of Committee's purposes, advisory role, and current priority projects.

Two (2) candidates withdrew their applications prior to the scheduled interviews. One (I)
candidate missed his interview appointment, and was not able to be rescheduled due to a
planned vacation. The remaining nine (9) applicants were interviewed over a I3-day period.
The candidates displayed a high level of interest in trails and related issues, as well as a desire to
serve the community. Based on its final review, the Selection Subcommittee suggested that the
following individuals be recommended to the City Council for appointment to the Trails Ad Hoc
Committee:

· Community-at-Large member (2 representatives): Joe Jones (incumbent) and William
(Jeft) Durbin
. Regional Trails representative: Mike Sedlak
· Community-at-Large member alternate: Herb Ritter

At its September 14, 2006 meeting, the full Commission endorsed the recommendations of the
Selection Subcommittee. Copies of all applications are being provided to the Council under
separate cover.

SR 06:238
Page 2
