<br />/ <br /> <br /> <br />4 <br /> <br />iil--iI <br />- .. <br />pLEASANTONo <br /> <br />City Council <br />General Plan Workshop <br />Staff Report <br /> <br />August 29,2006 <br />Planning Department <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />REVIEW OF DRAFT PUBLIC SAFETY ELEMENT OF THE <br />GENERAL PLAN <br /> <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: <br /> <br />Review and consider the Draft Public Safety Element of the General Plan; <br />provide feedback on amendments to be made prior to incorporation into the <br />Draft General Plan document <br /> <br />SUMMARY <br /> <br />The Draft Public Safety Element of the General Plan has been reviewed by <br />the Planning Commission and recommended for City Council consideration. <br />The background information and goals, policies, and programs have been <br />edited, updated, reorganized, and amended to reflect new information and <br />issues not considered in the 1996 General Plan. The City Council is being <br />asked to review this Draft and provide feedback to staff prior to the <br />incorporation of the Draft Element into the Draft General Plan document. <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council: <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />General Plans are required to include a Safety Element that addresses the protection of the <br />community from any unreasonable risks associated with seismic activity, ground shaking, <br />landslides, tsunami, dam failure, and other similar risks. The 1996 General Plan Public Safety <br />Element includes background information and goals, policies, and programs related to geologic <br />hazards, fire hazards, flooding, hazardous materials, aviation hazards, police services, and <br />emergency operations. Background text and policies for the updated Element were proposed by <br />staff from the Fire, Police, Public Works, Building and Planning departments, and reviewed and <br /> <br />SR 06:209 <br />Page 1 of6 <br />
