I. INTRODUCTION AND GOALS

Pleasanton Memorial Gardens Cemetery is approximately a five (5) acre parcel
originally operated as an Odd Fellows Fraternal Cemetery. The historic
Pleasanton Memorial Garden Cemetery is contiguous with the St. Augustine
Roman Catholic Church Cemetery. The Catholic Cemetery is also approximately
five (5) acres. These are the only cemeteries within the limits of the City of
Pleasanton.

The City, in the 2000 Census, had 63,654 persons residing in 23,311
households. Of these residents, 73.4% were owner occupied. The community
includes 5,011 (7.9%) residents of Hispanic origins and 7,387 (11.6%) residents
who are Asian. The median age was 36.5 years with 71.8% of the residents over
18 years of age and 6,013 (9.6%) over 62 years of age.

The community is principally served by one funeral home, Graham-Hitch, at 4167
First Street in Pleasanton.

~
I
t
I
I
I
I
I
I

There are principally two forms of disposition of human remains: (i) full-casket
burial in a grave or crypt and (ii) cremation. Selected indMduals will donate the
body for scientific study; however, the body is ultimately cremated.

In any given locality (county) a certain percentage of the time, the deceased is
shipped to another locality for final burial. Of course, as "ship-outs" occur, "ship-
ins" also occur. Today, when relocation of the deceased is necessary, many
consumers select cremation to facilitate ease of transportation.

Disposition data is not determined and reported by either the state or county
govemment. By utilizing data collected from the county cemeteries, the
Cremation Association of North American (CANA), area funeral homes and
crematories, as well as our experience, we have developed a disposition model
to project cemetery need.

Cremation rates for the State of California as a whole and as reported by CANA
are as follows:

3
