that these components will be continuously internally illuminated, and constructed of vertical,
glazed art pieces. For this reason, staff proposes to remove these two elements from the
construction budget. Staff would begin the process to award a design contract to an artist
capable of working with glass to design either all or part of the marquee blocks.

The signage for the Firehouse Arts Center is not a part of the design review approval. Staff
received comments from the Planning Commission indicating that the block lettering was too
institutional. It was recommended that staff evaluate other alternatives, perhaps contracting with
an artist to make the lettering 'artsy' or whimsical. Staff supports that proposal and would also
recommend that the City Council direct staff to pursue this opportunity. The sign program
would return for review by the Planning Commission.

Historic Fire Station No. 1

The existing historic Fire Station No. 1 will be renovated by:

.
