CITY OF PLEASANTON 6A <br /> STAFF REPORT <br /> <br /> September 24, 1996 <br /> Police Department <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Approval of recommendations for use of Citizen's Option <br /> for Public Safety Program (COPS) appropriation. <br /> <br />STAff RECOMMENDATION: The City Council hold a public hearing and adopt a <br /> resolution to approve the proposal for use of the COPS <br /> appropriation to fund: <br /> (1) an additional Police Officer for assignment to the <br /> Crime Prevention Bureau, <br /> (2) refurbishment or enhancement of the Crime <br /> Prevention Bureau equipment, and <br /> (3) an Informational Video about the police <br /> department and community involvement in public <br /> safety. <br /> (See Anticipated Expenditures for details.) <br /> In accordance with AB 3229, the council must hold the <br /> heating in September and pass a resolution within 60 <br /> days. <br /> <br />SUMMARY: State Assembly Bill 3229 of July 12, 1996 established the <br /> Citizen's Option for Public Safety (COPS) Program. ff <br /> approved by the Council, the City will receive a <br /> proportionate share of $100,000,000 appropriated in <br /> 1996/97 for public safety based on the City's population. <br /> The City's share will be $133,768. <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and Members of the Council: <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br /> <br />State Assembly Bill 3229, signed by the Governor on July 12, 1996 added section 30061 of the <br />Government Code establishing the $100,000,000 Citizen's Option for Public Safety (COPS) <br />Program to supplement otherwise available funding for local public safety services. As required <br />by the bill, the County has made a written request for the funds from the State Controller, <br />established a Supplemental Law Enforcement Services Fund, and will establish a Supplemental <br />Law Enforcement Oversight Committee. They are required to annually review expenditures of <br /> <br />SR 96:279 <br /> <br /> <br />
