· City Pleasanton
STA REPORT 41

June 18, 1996

SUBJECT: Employee Recognition Program - Phase IV - Suggestion Award

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends the City Council approve Phase IV of the Employee
Recognition Program as presented by the Recognition Committee

SUMMARY:
The Recognition Committee was formed to design an Employee Recognition
Program. The Committee completed Phases I and II in 1991 and Phase III in
1993. Phase IV establishes the Suggestion Award.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the Council:

BACKGROUND

The Recognition Committee was formed by the City Manager to custom design an Employee
Recognition Program. The Committee is made up of employees representing all segments of
City employees including several department heads.

Phase I covered the annual employee awards luncheon plus service awards gift plan. Phase II
addressed retirement from City service. Phase III established the Special Awards for Customer
Service, Exceptional Service and Volunteer Service.

After completing Phase III, the Committee expressed a desire to look at recognizing employees
that identify ways City operations can be improved and identify a solution or identify a way a
City activity can be done quicker, better, easier, safer or at less cost.

The Employee Recognition Committee began working on Phase IV of the Employee Recognition
Program in January 1995. The first task was to research other agencies that had similar
employee recognition programs that included an "idea" or suggestion award. After identifying
and contacting these agencies, the Committee reviewed five existing programs. From those
programs, the Committee developed the City of Pleasanton Suggestion Award (see attached
Suggestion Award Program).

SR 96:195
