CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON <br /> <br /> ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 96-80 <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION APPROVING PARTICIPATION IN <br /> THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONS <br /> TRANSPORTATION PARTNERS PROGRAM <br /> <br />WHEREAS, current patterns of land use in many communities increase people's <br /> dependence on the automobile and are largely responsible for the 2% <br /> annual increase in vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in the U.S.; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this dependence on the automobile results in increased pollutant emissions, <br /> the loss of precious open space, the need for building and extending cosfly <br /> roads and public services, the inequitable distribution of economic <br /> resources, and the loss of a sense of community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, appropriate mixed use, transit-, bicycle- and pedestrian-oriented <br /> development and redevelopment can reduce auto dependency and VMT, <br /> and create more livable and resource efficient communities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Pleasanton has been identified by the Local Government <br /> Commission's Center for Livable Communities as contributing to its <br /> judsdiction's environment, economic health and sense of community by <br /> adopting land use policies which encourage transit-, bicycle- and <br /> pedestrian-oriented development and redevelopment; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Center for Livable Communities provides assistance to cities and <br /> counties through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's <br /> Transportation Partners Program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Transportation Partners Program supports community transportation <br /> solutions across the country through information services, technical <br /> assistance, and recognition; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, cities that participate in the Transportation Partners Program receive <br /> recognition and support for their efforts to improve their land use pattems <br /> and reduce their residents' dependence on the automobile; and <br /> <br /> <br />
