Goals & Objectives __ Pleasanton Cultural Plan Goal B: Children & Youth To establish and support cultural enrichment activities and programs for the young people of Pleasanton. Rationale' The City of Pleasanton is known Bay Area-wide as a community that values its young people. Its high concentration of families, quality schools, and ample recreation facilities are evidence of the importance placed on the needs and interests of these future generations. Yet, during the research conducted for this Cultural Plan, there is a widely-held view that the arts and cultural needs of Pleasanton's children require new programs, facilities, and activities to nurture and cultivate such interests. Particular attention has been paid to the programs at the Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD). Research conducted across the nation now provides conclusive evidence that children who participate in comprehensive arts education curriculum perform better in all aspects of school work: from math and science test scores to team- building and social skill development. This goal is intended to increase participation in arts and culture by Pleasanton's young people, to raise community expectations for the cultural enrichment its children will enjoy, establish high standards for arts education and recreation programs, and facilitate arts and cultural expression by the City's young generation. It is the vision of the Planning Committee that a mutually beneficial relationship can be nurtured between the PUSD and the City's arts, cultural. and heritage organizations and supporters. Artists offering skills, arts groups providing performance and exhibit resources, and community access to school district- based programs and facilities represent one area of focus of this goal.
