Pleasanton Cultural Plan
Goals & Objectives __

Goal A: Facilities

To provide quality facilities to accommodate arts and cultural activities.

Rationale

State-of-the art cultural venues allow the arts to thrive. Cultural facilities to
accommodate performances, exhibitions, rehearsals, classes, and the creation of
artwork represent an important cornerstone in the culture of a community'. As
other cities have recognized, it is often difficult for arts and cultural
organizations to grow and thrive without adequate venues which are welcoming
and comfortable for audiences and visitors, and technically suitable for artists.
As the City of Pleasanton strengthens its regional identity and experiences
population growth from the continued influx of new residents, many involved in
this planning process have noted the need to maintain, improve, and develop
new facilities to accommodate existing and future cultural programs.

While the community has recognized the important role facilities play through
its creation of the Amador Theater and Cultural Arts Center, the public input
received for this Cultural Plan has continued to identify outstanding cultural
facility needs as a top priority. Among priorities for cultural facilities are the
development of a community arts center that could accommodate the needs for
small theater spaces, an outdoor bandshell, a community an gallery, etc., and
renovation and improvement of existing facilities (e.g., Cultural Arts Center,
Veterans Hall, Amador Theater.)

Key to Objective Symbols: , - Priority * - Other => - Implementation Step

Objectives

New/Re- Use Facilities
'k Work with the City of Pieasanton (through coordination with the City's
Downtown Parks/Trails Task Force) to prioritize a cultural use for the
historic Firehouse building (which might include visual arts exhibit space, a
Black Box theater, and/or a Young People' s Cultural Center).

(Budget $50,000-$100, O00 for planning studies and conceptual plan, time
frame to be determined)

, Identify specific facility needs for a community art gallery space and locate
an appropriate building to accommodate this need.

AMS Planning &Research 6
May 1998
