In response to an inquiry by Con-amissioner Roberts whether the family dog bothered. the <br />chickens, Haley replied that the dog and the chickens co-existed peacefiilly_ <br />Sophie Hudson, 1021 Malaga Court, applicant's daughter, stated that the chickens were like part <br />of their family and hoped that they would be able to keep theara. <br />Vanessa Kawaihu, 871 Sycamore Road, spoke in support of this application and noted that the <br />area had a. long tradition of having chickens on the properties- She noted that they were an <br />organic way of fertilizing and controlling bugs- She added that this is a good project for children <br />and teaches them where food comes from; they can also share the experience with their friends. <br />Conimissioncr Arkin noted that he supported this item and that he had visited the site, which was a <br />completely different situation than the last chicken application. He noted that the coop was well <br />designed aizd insulated the sound adequately. I Ic had not received any complaints. <br />THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED. <br />In response to Commissioner Blank's inquiry regarding what the condition requirit~g the <br />chickens to be h-apt in an enclosed space meant, Ms_ Decker replied that the chickens may be <br />allowed to roam the grounds of the residence or enclosed area of the back yard, but they may not <br />be allowed outside the fence. <br />Coamissioner Fox noted that the yard was well screened by foliage. <br />Comaissioner Blank noted that he would like to have consistency in the conditions regarding <br />chickens. <br />Chairperson Maas noted that she did not ariind ni eking specific conditions for different <br />applications ii- needed. She asked staff if the Commission would have an opportunity to review <br />the standards should the Municipal Code be amended with respect to the keeping of chicken and <br />fowl . <br />Ms. Decker noted that this process was still relatively new and added that a Code amendment <br />would be brought forward in the future with standards- The Comar~ission would have an <br />opportunity to discuss those standards in greater detail at that time. <br />Corrarnissioner Koberts noted that their chickens were wonderful pets. <br />Commissioner Arkin moved to melee the required use permit t3ndiings stated in the staff <br />report and to approve PAUP-2, subject to the conditions of approval listed in Exhibit B, as <br />recommended by staff. <br />G'ommissioner Fox seconded the motion. <br />PLANNING COMMiS SION MINUTES October 1 9, 2005 Page 8 of 19 <br />.... _ . ...T _ __..__ -T _T._.. __ __. <br />
