THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPE NED_
Ed Artingcr, Continental Signs, representing the applicant, noted that this issue was
addressed with the City in 2001 when Trader Joe's was considering whether to leave the
C ity_ Since then, the store size was doubled and would like to have visibility fron-x the
Freeway off-ramp. At this point, the off-ramp has a hill that makes it difficult for people
to see whore the store is. IIc believed that any traffic increase would generate revenue
for the City and noted that 'Trader Joe's was a neighborhood business_ He noted that a
20-foot high sign was the xrxinimum for freeway visibility and that the Baker's Square
sign currently obscured Trader Joe's sign. Staff did not wish to discuss a 20-foot high
sign and noted that keeping the sign at eight feet was not worth a change in signage.
Del Scott, Assistant Manager, Trader Joe's, thanked the City for the plaque
acknowledging 1 5 years in business and noted that Trader Joe's current sign was not
easily visible. The sign itself was not lit, although the letters are illuminated.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED_
Chairperson Maas suggested that the Commission deny this application and direct stati~ to
work with the applicant for a redesign_
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Blank on whether any directional signage
could be put on the freeway, Ms. Nerland noted that CalTrans would not allow that_
Chairperson Maas suggested that the property manager prune the trees to increase current
visibility_
Commissioner Arkin moved to deny PSDR-223_
G'ommissioner Fox seconded the motion_
Commissioner Blank added an amendment to encourage the applicant to work with
City staff to develop an appropriate monument sign_
Con-xmissioners Arkin and Fox accepted the proposed axr~endment.
ROLL CALL VOTE.
AYES: Commissioners Arkin, Blank, Fox, Maas and Roberts.
NOES: None.
ABSTAIN: None.
RECUSED: None.
ABSENT: None_
Resolution No. PC-2005-20 was entered and adopted as motioned.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES May 7 ] , 2005 Page 14 of 16
