No action was taken.
7. MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS
Housing Density
Con-imissioner Blank noted that two meetings ago, Commissioner Arkin had made a
motion to re-evaluate the number of houses per acre in a development. He requested that
Commissioner Arkin express his intent with respect to that issue.
Commissioner Arkin advised that it was his intent that that be done as quickly as possible
because of proposed projects that would be considered under the current General Plan as
opposed to the new General Plan. He would like the placement of houses per buildable
acreage be considered, rather than raw acreage.
Ms. Decker advised that staff was attentive to the Commission's desire to hold that
discussion. She noted that item would be agendized and that staff would provide experts
in those areas to provide information to the Commission.
Staples Ranch
Commissioner Fox noted that she had read in the newspaper about the sale of 78 acres
with respect to Staples Ranch and inquired about its status.
Ms_ Decker advised that staff did not have all the available information, but that there
was a plan to sell the acreage and that the acreage had not actually been sold. The site is
part of the Stoneridge Drive Specific Plan area, and the City was very sensitive to the
issues of the project.
Legislation Memo
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Fox regarding housing equilibrium as it
related to the legislative memo regarding the Housing Element, Ms. Nerland replied that
staff provided information about State legislation and that it raised policy issues about
pending proj ects_ She noted that speci£c discussion about those projects should be
property agendized.
Commissioner Blank believed that at the previous evening's Joint City Council-Planning
Commission workshop, staff indicated that it would look into that letter in detail and
provide a briefing document for the City Councilmembers as well as Plai~iiing
Commissioners.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Arkin regarding the available land for
housing listed in the Housing Element, Ms. Nerland replied that the Planning
Commission should identify "sufficient, additional, adequate, and available alternative
sites," as cited in the legislation.
Commissioner Blank believed that it was dangerous for Commissioners to interpret the
---- raw legislation themselves. Ms. Nerland stated that the Department of Housing and
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES March 23, 2005 Page 8 of 1 O
