He noted that Alternate A2 featured a tower that may be popped out two feet, depending
on the Commission's wishes_ A different stucco color would be applied to the tower,
which would make it more distinct_ He noted that this alternative was met with
significantly less enthusiasm, but added that the tower could be made more distinct at a
lower cost_
He noted that Alternate A3 featured a flatter tower and aturret-type roof, which he
believed further reinforced Larry Cannon's original idea, emphasizing the horizontal
orientation of the building_ The banding was retained in this rendering_ He noted that the
renderer was slightly too realistic, and made the red band reflect the sky, making it
appear somewhat purple_
He noted that they wished to present a design that was attractive from Stanley Boulevard_
He added that they synthesized the strong points of all the alternatives, and increased the
width of the stone on the tower corners_ He displayed the view from Autotron, which was
the most adjacent neighbor_ He added that the wall massing had been broken up by
breaking up the vine and trellis treatments_
Commissioner Maas believed the combination of vines and rock on the corners was
attractive_
Mr_ Bachofner displayed the building from the dominant vinws_ He noted that staff asked
them repeatedly to install significant landscaping on the site_ The dominant traffic
benefited from seeing the sign, and that the visibility may be impacted by existing trees
on Stanley Boulevard_ He noted that the landscaping plan was conceptual because staff
asked the applicant to look at several varietals with respect to their water usage.
Mr_ Bachofner noted that he would be able to present photos of the scarlet dowering
trumpet vines if the Commission desired_
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED_
There were no speakers_
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED_
Commissioner Kameny thanked Mr_ Bachofner for returning with alternatives that
redacted the Commissioners' suggestions_ He recalled Commissioner Sedlak's comment
from the previous meeting that this building would be located in a business park_ He
believed the design was beautiful, and liked the "preferred variant" and the softened
details. He believed that the corporate logo should be retained. He noted that Larry
C ar~non's turnaround with the revised design was extremely fast. He believed that the
stone design on the tower was too busy visually.
Commissioner Maas noted that she liked the "preferred variant" as well.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES June 11, 2003 Page 5
