7_ MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS (continued) <br />Commissioner Sedlak inquired whether the Commission had discussed the building of <br />logs, and the accompanying restrictions within the community- He noted that Emeryville <br />had a large number of lofts, usually 1,200-1,900 square Feet and three stories, and that a <br />lot of units were accommodated in a small area- He noted that those logs were an original <br />build, and that other loft projects were converted from other uses, such as an old school <br />building- He believed that use would be compatible in Pleasanton, and that these high <br />densities in a small area could contain very nice amenities. <br />Mr_ Iserson noted that an applicant proposed alive/work loft use in downtown- Staff had <br />spent a lot of time trying to determine the appropriate standards and the building codes~ <br />Staff had supported the idea, but the applicant withdrew the project for lack of Financing. <br />He noted that aresidential-only loR project would a be considered amulti-family <br />residential use_ <br />Ms_ Nerland noted that she had worked on the Emeryville project, and noted that loft was <br />not a housing type, but was defined as how the housing was arranged. <br />A discussion about the various layouts of loR housing and how they are integrated into <br />the existing neighborhood ensued- <br />Commissioner Sedlak noted that he would share the research he had done on lofts with <br />the Commission_ <br />Commissioner Sedlak wished to restate the electrical transportation option for the golf <br />course, and suggested renting or leasing electrical vehicles. He noted that golf carts were <br />one of the major profit centers for golf courses~ <br />Commissioner Maas would like to see a company take this issue on as a pilot program~ <br />She cited the City of Monterey's use of electric cars for its inspections of City prof ects_ <br />Commissioner Sedlak thanked Commissioner Maas for that suggestion, and would <br />research the companies that provide that service- <br />Commissioner Sullivan noted that the Energy Colzllilittee had discussed the use of <br />electric cars for inspections_ <br />Commissioner Sedlak noted that the water acreage at quarries that could be available for <br />housing in the form of houseboats or cantilevered housing- He noted that there were a lot <br />of problems associated with this idea, but wished to explore the possibility- <br />Commissioner Maas believed that was a creative idea <br />PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES May 14, 2003 Page 18 <br />
