Chairperson Arkin expressed concern about the total height and mass of the building, <br />especially in comparison to the rest of the neighborhood. He believed that the loss of the <br />ridge view for the rear neighbors was the most significant impact. <br />Commissioner Kameny had no problem with letting the applicants build their addition to <br />the desired height <24 feet, six inches, and appreciated Mr. MacKay's viewpoint with <br />respect to the ridge view- <br />Commissioner Maas noted that staff considered the design to be within G'ode, and that the <br />FAR was acceptable. The Commission's job was to bring harmony, scale, and consistency <br />with the character to the project. She could accept a 24%-foot height, including the roof <br />tiles. <br />Cotrtmissioner Roberts believed that a 24'/~-foot height was acceptable. She noted that the <br />homes on either side of the applicant's house were two-story buildings, and understood <br />that homeowners became accustomed to having asingle-story home between them. <br />Con-tmissioner Maas acknowledged that it was a difficult subject. She spoke to several <br />people about the matter, and the majority noted that the applicants should be able to <br />practice their property rights as long as they abide by the Code. She noted that the <br />neighbors' concerns should be taken into account, and she believed that the applicants <br />were compromising towards that end. <br />Commissioner Kameny noted that homeowners do become accustomed to certain views, <br />and that change is difficult. He noted that the applicants' plans met Code and the <br />regulations, and that they should be able to build the addition. <br />Commissioner Sedlak expressed concern about the six inch gap, and requested an <br />explanation of the gap's necessity. <br />Chairperson Arkin noted that the gap was necessary to preserve their current ceiling and its <br />infrastructure. <br />With respect to the mass, Commissioner Roberts believed that the color of the house would <br />be very iiriportant_ She believed that a darker color would be better to reduce the mass. <br />Commissioner Maas moved to reverse the Zoning Administrator's approval of <br />Design Review application and approve it accordingly to the conditions reached by <br />cons¢nsus_ <br />Mr. lserson suggested that the motion be restated to uphold the appeal, but to modify the <br />conditions as stated previously= <br />1 .
