Commissioner Roberts noted that having a fire station across the street would. be a great
benefit.
THE PUELIC HEARING WAS CLOSED-
With respect to Question 1, page 3, Commissioner Maas noted that her comments were
more general with regard to the design. She was happy to hear that there was flexibility in
the design with respect to LEEDT~M certification, and that she would like the design to be
comfortable for both the neighbors and people entering the City through this gateway. She
felt that the proposed design did not flow from the house design and that the fire station
should look more "homey" and have a softer design. She would like to keep the
landscaping natural and pleasant, and believed the flexibility would be a benefit
Commissioner Roberts noted that the Commission had turned down many buildings that
featured those arches- She personally liked them, but acknowledged that people could be
bothered by them- She noted that the metal winery roof near her home was not offensive,
and suggested adding some stone elements to warm the appearance. She liked the passive
solar and wind. elements, and did not have any problems with the landscaping. Shc noted
that the use of turf would increase the water use significantly.
Commissioner Sedlak acknowledged that it was difficult to design a building. He inquired
whether the floor plan was designed first, and the elevations were built around it. He did
not feel it was consistent with surrounding buildings.
Mr_ Van Cleeve replied that every fire station they designed was operationally based, and
that the floor plan was the primary consideration. The elevations were a result of working
with a third dimension, and the LEEDTM elements were integrated into the design.
Commissioner Sullivan noted that he was very happy to see project brought before the
Commission. He added that he liked the landscaping from a water conservation standpoint,
and noted that traditional lawns consumed a lot of water and pesticides- He believed that a
neighborhood meeting would be a good idea- He would like to see color drawings and
more visuaLs_ He noted that if a fuel cell infrastructure were to be set up during
construction, fire trucks may be able to run off hydrogen fuel cells in the future.
G'ommissioncr Sullivan complimented the applicants, and believed this would be a great
project for the City.
Commissioner Kameny believed this was a very positive start to this prof ect, and looked
forward to the potential Silver rating. He would like to see the design blend into the
residential neighborhood, as the Shell gas station did- He suggested using brick, such as
wains-coating, and supported a metal roof if it was toned down.
Chairperson Arkin concurred with the Commissioners, and stated that he was excited about
the potential of having a Silver rated City building. He liked the siding design, and asked
for further clarification with regard to the siren noise in the neighborhood.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES January 8, 2003 Yage 6
T' _.. ~.. _.
