In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Sedlak, Ms. Burns noted that the City funded
the project in its entirety. They also intended to submit grant applications to various
agencies and authorities to offset the cost of the LEEDTM-related items in the facility. If the
grants are awarded, the General Fund money will go back to the City as an oFFset.
Commissioner Sedlak noted that there were several funding opportunities to pay for green
building and energy efficient projects.
Ms. Ludwig noted that because they started early with the cost savings, the City was in a
very good position with regard to this project.
Tn response to an inquiry by G'hairperson Arkin, Ms. Ludwig noted that the cost of filing
the green building application to USGBC was approximately $1,500. The cost of creating
the document would be eligible for a grant through their agency.
A discussion regarding the checklist and the recommendations report ensued.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Sullivan regarding cost and savings studies
regarding building with Silver certification in mind, Ms_ Ludwig replied that they had not
reached that point yet. She added that because they designed the building with green
building in mind, they would benefit from those savings.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Sullivan, Ms. Ludwig replied that it would he
possible to achieve the goals of Silver certification with a neotraditional design. She noted
that passive ventilation and orienting the building to the appropriate wind pattern were two
ways to work within the LEEDTM system and to design it to the neighborhood.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED_
Harinder Grewal, 1666 Whispering Oaks Way, noted that he had not seen any drawings
until today. He would like to see the fire station's placement on the site, and what the site
itself looked like.
Mr. Pavan showed the design to Mr. Grewal, and Chairperson Arkin described the public
hearing and approval process. Mr. Pavan advised that he would contact Mr. Grewal and
make copies of the work session staff report and the exhibits available.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Maas, Mr. Grewal noted that ihey would have
their first homeowners association meeting next week. Ms. Burns noted that they would
be delighted to make a presentation to the homeowners association.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Maas, Mr. Grewal noted that the residents
would like to have a design that blended into the community, and expressed concern about
siren noise.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES January 8, 2003 Page 5
