station at a future date_ He noted that staff would be able to address the feasibility of <br />making a fuel cell part of the building at the next public hearing_ <br />Mr_ Pavan noted that no additional letters or phone calls had been received by staff from <br />the public, although he expected there would be some concerns regarding the operation of <br />sirens_ Ms. Burns would respond to those yuestions during her presentation. <br />Kerry Burns, Fire Administration Manager, noted that the design team was in attendance, <br />and would be available for questions. She introduced Anne Ludwig from the Alameda <br />County Waste Management Authority, and Geof Syphers, Director of Green Building <br />Services with Xenergy, Inc., who would address any green building issues. She noted that <br />the City's development of the Energy Plan dovetailed perfectly into tyre architecture, <br />design, and functionality of Fire Station No. 4 with the City's goals for energy <br />conservation. She noted that the process of developing the conceptual plan that addressed <br />the operational needs of a fire station, but was also very energy sensitive. <br />Kirk van Cleeve, project architect, RRN Design Group, Oakdale, detailed the design <br />constraints and considerations of the new fire station. He described the ingress and egress <br />layout, and noted that their primary intent was to obtain LEEDTM certification as an <br />integrative approach to the design. He described how the orientation of the building <br />optimized the heating and cooling of tyre building. Other site amenities were considered, <br />including a pond for cooling, finishes, colors, and orientation that would lead to the Silver <br />certification. <br />Mr. Van Cleeve detailed the site plan. A discussion of the fence design ensued <br />Commissioner Maas expressed concern about the view from Bernal Avenue, and added <br />that she would not want to see a solid wall from that area_ <br />A discussion of the canopy ensued_ Nfr. Van Cleeve noted that they would not cover the <br />entire parking area with the intent of sheltering cars, but that they would be used as a shade <br />structure _ <br />Commissioner Roberts expressed concern about the reflectivity of the roof. Chairperson <br />Arkin shared that concern. <br />Mr. Van Cleeve advised that a number of materials could be used for the roof, and noted <br />that they were not attached to the sample displayed on the materials board_ He noted that <br />using a light material that would meet LEEDTM certification was the primary goal, and that <br />a very reflective material would not be used.
