Nelson Fialho
City Manager, City of Pleasanton

11/17/05
Page 2

3. A strong DIulti-purpose focus that benefits the cODIDIunity at large (cont'd.)
. Multi-coDIDIunity purpose
This project vvill benefit our community and others. The creek pathvvay is widely used
today by residents from all over Pleasanton. New educational aspects and improved
habitat, combined with recreational amenities, like Kottinger Park's walking/biking path
and picnic areas, will make it a likely destination for many.

The project is of regional significance as Kottinger Creek is in the Alameda Creek
Watershed W'hich eventually empties into San Francisco Bay. Another project objective,
then, is to better clean the W'ater as it passes through the creek.

. Historic Preservation
Kottinger Creek is a feature of natural history that has existed for eons and should be
preserved for future generations. The Primary goal of this project is to return it to proper
function. By definition, this will take the creek back to some earlier point in its history
when a healthier habitat supported a wider variety of terrestrial and aquatic animals.

For those who may not be familiar with the project, a list of its benefits appears below.
When completed, the Kottinger Creek Restoration will:
. Restore 1,820 feet of degraded creek channel
. Create 2.1 acres of native riparian habitat
. Remove invasive plant species and failing culverts
. Restore a diversity of native plant species
. Provide an easily accessible restoration demonstration park for the Tri Valley
. Provide creek access points to encourage visitor interaction
. Improve and enlarge picnic areas within the creek corridor
. Provide a Creek Maintenance and Monitoring Guide and training opportunities for
City employees and the general public
. Better clean our vvater as it passes through Kottinger Creek on its vvay to the Bay

Thank you again for this chance to properly describe the scope and benefits of the
Kottinger Creek Restoration Project.

Sincerely,

The frienq$ of Kpttjm~;e:r Cfee~
