The City is able to purchase this equipment directly from the manufacturer, saving all
distributor and other middleman costs. The price quoted by Econolite is $15,088.97
per unit, and the units are completely compatible with the City's new 1-580 Smart
Corridors control technology, and video detection equipment.

Staff recommends using the City's signal maintenance contractor to install the
replacement signal cabinets at a cost of about $3,000 each. Staff recommends
authorizing the expenditure of up to $20,000 in contingency funds to cover the cost of
any unexpected material or labor costs.

The City has been putting over $100,000 a year aside in an account to cover the cost of
replacing aging traffic signal equipment. Staff recommends that City Council authorize
the expenditure of up to $200,889.70 of traffic signal asset replacement funds to cover
the cost of this work.

FISCAL IMPACT

This work should reduce traffic signal maintenance costs and reduce traffic signal down
time at these ten intersections. The replacement of this equipment using traffic signal
asset replacement funds will not impact funding for any other traffic signal work.

Respectfully Submitted,

Rob Wilson
Director of Public Works

Susan Rossi
Director of Finance

~

i'
Nelson Fialho
City Manager

~ L-J~

~~~
SR:05:334
Page 3 of 3
