Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:
BACKGROUND
This project involved the replacement of original asphalt pedestrian paths in Orloff, Harvest,
W oodthrush and Walnut Grove parks with new concrete pathways, similar to other City parks.
Over the years, the paths in these older neighborhood parks had deteriorated and were the source
of numerous maintenance call-outs and citizen complaints.
A formal bid opening was held on May 10, 2005, with a total of three (3) bids received. The
low bid of $287,576 was submitted by Suarez and Munoz Construction, Inc., and all bid
documents were found to be in order. The Engineer's estimated cost of this work was $272,000.
On June 7, 2005, the City Council awarded the construction contract and work began shortly
thereafter. The Contractor pursued the work diligently - completing all of the construction well
within the allotted construction time allowance.
BUDGET
Funding for the project was allocated in the Park Renovation Fund in the amount of $330,712.
The original contract amount was $287,576, and two (2) contract change orders were issued,
totaling $28,145.74. The largest of these change orders was issued for the increased quantities
of concrete paving required at three (3) of the four (4) project sites, and for the addition of
vehicle control bollards at all four (4) sites. The total adjusted contract amount is $315,721.74.
The unused funds ($14,990.26) will be returned to the Park Renovation Fund for use in other
park or street landscaping projects.
FISCAL IMPACT
Completion of these improvements is not expected to increase park maintenance costs.
Respectfully submitted,
~~
Ja W.
