r
'"
pLEASANTONc City Council
Staff Report
July 17, 2001
Public Works Department
SUBJECT REVIEW OF TRAFFIC ROUNDABOUTS ON V ALLEY AVENUE
(BERNAL DEVELOPMENT) AND VINEYARD AVENUE
(VINEYARD CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENT)
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following action at the
meeting ofJuly 17, 200 I:
Authorize staff to continue with the design and construction of
Traffic Roundabouts on Valley A venue as part of the Bernal
Development, and on Vineyard Avenue as part of the Vineyard
Corridor Development.
SUMMARY The approved specific plan for the Bernal Development included three
roundabouts at intersections along the new portion of Valley A venue, south
of Bernal Avenue. During the design process, staff has directed the
developer to upgrade the design to meet the recommendations in the Federal
Roundabout Design Guidelines. Staff has also added a fourth roundabout on
Valley Avenue at the first commercial driveway to reduce speeds and
increase safety along the corridor.
The approved specific plan for the new portion of Vineyard A venue through
the Vineyard Corridor Development included a new traffic signal on
Vineyard adjacent to the elementary school site. Staff recommends that two
roundabouts be constructed on Vineyard on either side of the school site
instead of a traffic signal to better calm traffic near the school and to reduce
overall congestion in the area.
The developer for both these proj ects are now completing final
infrastructure plans. Because roundabouts are new to Pleasanton, staff
SR:01:171
Page 1
