As can be imagined, there are many options available to address these issues, however staff is
recommending Option 4 because it will result in considerable cost savings, will continue the
Council's policy of attempting to reach all residents, and will establish a consistent and familiar
practice of meeting notices that the public can easily identify. As indicated, if the Council
approves this option, staff will continue to use the other papers as part of its public information
process for items of major concern and for solicitations. In addition, staff will continue to use
its web site, Channel 30 and electronic notifications by email, which has grown in recent years,
as a regular way to notify the public. Finally, the Council could consider using the other
newspapers to run much smaller, occasional ads notifying the public to visit the City web site
for current information on meeting and general City activity. This process may help direct the
public to the web site, which contains the most up to date information. This option will not
impact the current practice of mailing meeting notices to targeted neighborhoods.
FISCAL IMPACT
The cost of legal publications has been included in the Operating Budget. A change to the
current practice of publishing general notices will result in considerable savings estimated at
$200,000 annually.
~~~s ~&u.
awn G.
