Cultivate living soils by using compost, or organic amendments with humus and natural bacteria
as amendments to enhance soils without chemical fertilizers. Green waste could be recycled in
various ways. In other words, recycle, muse, and restore; nothing is wasted.

Design 'green' amhitectum, using solar panels, wind energy, recycled and renewable resources
and products in building construction and operation. This strategy reduces the demand on non-renewable
building and energy resources and minimizes life-cycle energy costs. Buildings that use passive
insolation, or the practice of designing buildings and public spaces to utilize the local sun patterns to
optimize natural heating and cooling, require less non-renewable electrical and fuel resoumes.

Design landscapes to harvest on-site water. Incorporate methods of collecting storm water runoff
for on-site seasonal irrigation, infiltration and/or purification prior to draining into natural waterways.

Incorporate xenscape plant no des gn either as a demonstration garden or for naturalized
habitats. This strategy uses low and very low water-demanding plants that match water needs to
natural precipitation rates and patterns.

Use integrated pest management rather than pesticides to balance the ecosystem. Integrated pest
management involves introducing fauna into floral habitats, rather than the sole use of chemicals,
as a means to controlling infestations of insects.

Follow low impact, resource efficient, Iow-level polluting, contextually stable construction methods.

Design public spaces to match the physical form to user behavior.

Design with original form that emerges in response to a specific site and program. Enduring design is
founded in pragmatism and sustained through community participation.

Design environments to serve our parents, ourselves and our children all at the same time, and over time.

Design landscapes to be universally accessible at all levels for all people.

Design to encourage environmental literacy, offering to the public the means to translate and
comprehend the ideas and benefits of sustainable landscapes.

Demonstrate the best practices of sustainability and help promote the idea that sustainable design
features are known, appreciated and feasible, that sustainability is mainstream and supported by
the public.

Ensure that park maintenance remains a top priority through a steady stream of public use,
volunteerism and funding. In these days of challenged public funding, new models of public
space design, construction and maintenance must be considered in order to create an enduring
asset.

14
