THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED.

Ken Whipple, Principal of Valley View School, represented the application. He said he has
read and concurs with staff conditions. He further explained the reason for the sign location
and height was because of a concern that it would not be seen because of buses parking by
the curb. The Parents' Group and he had traversed the school grounds in search of the best
location and they felt the one they had chosen would be the least obtrusive while being the
most effective.

Commissioner Horan said he felt the sign was in the right location, but was somewhat
concerned about the bottom of the sign being above the fence. Mr. Whipple explained
that the sign will align with the bottom of the fence and there would be no gap between the
sign and fence.

After further discussion, the Commission concluded the sign location was appropriate as
proposed.

Mike Ananos, Director of Maintenance, stated that the school supports the Parents' Group
and the proposed sign. In addition, he said the School District will maintain the sign.

THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED.
Commissioner Hovingh said he is more impressed with this sign than with the Vintage Hills
School sign because it cannot be readily seen by the residents.

Further discussion ensued as to the location of the site. The Commission concluded that the
school and the Parents' Group had the welfare of the children at heart and would do the best
job possible.

Commissioner McGuirk favored conditioning the application as with the Vintage Hills School
application.

A motion was made by Commissioner Michelotti, seconded by Commissioner McGuirk
making the six required findings and approving Case Z-91-11 subject to the conditions of the
staff report with the following modification:

o That the sign be maintained to the satisfaction of the Planning Director.

ROLL CALL VOTE

AYES:
NOES:
ABSENT:
ABSTAIN:

Commissioners Horan, Hovingh, McGuirk, Michelotti, and Chairman Mahem
None
None
None

Minutes Planning Commission
May 22, 1991

Page 5
