THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED

Leslie Coonan, 3408 Bordeaux Place, stated she has read the staff report and concurs with
staff conditions. A colored rendering of the proposed sign was displayed for the
Commission.

Scott MeLand, 7650 Marathon Drive, Livermore, represented the Corporate Sign Company.
In response to Commissioner Horan's question, he explained that the base of the sign will be
of fabricated aluminum and covered with a finish to match the school building.

Commissioner McGuirk expressed concern about the durability of the protective lexon shield
for the face of the sign. Mr. McLand stated that it is virtually unbreakable, even by rocks
being thrown at it. The sign frame is out of heavy gauge aluminum with a polyurethane
finish. In response to Commissioner McGuirk's question, he said it could possibly be
scratched and should it be vandalized by paint, it would probably be best to just replace the
face.

Commissioner Wright expressed concern that with expansion and contraction or if kids
might kick the sign that the sign might separate at the bottom.

Mr. McLand did not think this could happen, but would check into the matter.

Mike Ananos, Director of Maintenance for the School District, expressed support for the
Parents' Group and their sign project. In addition, he stated that the school will be
responsible for maintaining and replacing any sign parts. He said if vandalism should occur
and if paint could not be removed with solvent, the school district would take care of the
matter. They are also concemed about the appearance of the schools and want them to be as
attractive as possible.

Commissioner Hovingh felt the landscaping in front of Vintage Hills School seemed bleak
and would like to see this enriched. Mr. Ananos said the existing landscaping was installed
about a year ago and some of the trees are still fairly small; in addition, with the water
shortage, they are trying to monitor and ration their grass watering per City standards.

Commissioner Hovingh also expressed concern that people within even one quarter mile
distance from the school still brought their children to the school in cars which increased
traffic problems. He asked whether the school might discourage this practice. Mr. Ananos
stated that parents are concerned about the safety of their children; hence, they drop them off
at school rather than even walk rather short distances. Parking at the school is discouraged
by having a very small parking lot of seven stalls; car pooling is encouraged and this can be
stressed to the parents for the increased safety of the children.

Minutes Planning Commission
May 22, 1991

Page 3

..

-
