Vision Statement for Pleasanton
Both Vision Statements present a very positive picture of the City of Pleasanton. Many of
the descriptions in both statements actually portray the present day version of the City.

For example, in Statement 1, there are sentiments such as "Pleasanton is a great place to
live, work and raise a family." And, "We will seek to minimize health and safety
hazards." I think both statements are tree today.

In Vision 2, we read that Pleasanton "Has a variety of attractive neighborhoods with
housing of various densities and prices where families thrive." And, Pleasanton
"Maintains its separate identity as a anique community while acknowledging its
relationship to the larger region." All of that is tree today.

And all of this is fine if we want Pleasanton 10 years from now to remain similar or
identical to the Pleasanton of today. And if that is tree, I would state exactly that in the
Vision Statement.

As I was reading this, I started thinking of how I would visualize Pleasanton 10 years
from now.

What I was looking for were statements, where I could visualize, where I could see in my
mind what the city would look like ten years from now. There are a number of major
issues that I believe should be included in, and be the comerstones of this Vision
statement.

Here are a few issues that I think must stand out and be much more specific in nature as
part of this statement:

1. I would like to read and then visualize what the Bernal Park will look like 10
years from now. Is it the absolute center of Theatrical offerings in the Th-Valley
area, which is an ambitious vision, or is it just a local gathering spot for the
weekly concerts currently staged at the park on 1st street? Or is it both? Is it the
focal point of the city like Central Park in New York City, or is it a quiet, non-
obtrusive part of the city? Given that it's an area that has taken or will take 10
years to plan and develop, and will be a gateway to the city, I would think it
would be a large part of this Vision statement.

2. What will downtown look like? Currently it's one wonderful Main Street, with a
welcoming sign. Should it consist of two or three parallel streets of shops and
restaurants or should it stay the same? Should it be set off from the rest of the
town with gateway welcoming signs at either end of Main Street? Will it look
exactly the same 10 years from now? I believe this should be addressed.

3. The nation's population is aging as we all know. Is Pleasanton a city that will care
for its aging population? Will it provide specific areas of the city for this
population? We currently have a Senior center on Sunol Boulevard. Should we
