Louis Pelligrini, 2660 Camino Segura, Pleasanton, represented the pplication. He gave the
background of Hope Hospice and said they have been in their prese t location in Hopyard
Village for four years. Their lease is due in the immediate future. The Board of Directors
of Hope Hospice asked that another location be researched that wo d provide more space for
display of merchandise and also to allow them more space for stora e as they sort through
donated items. The Board's second recommendation was that the I tion should be in a
better, more high profile area as the items displayed are of a higher quality than other thrift
stores. They also advised that advertising should be done. He no they have looked at
other locations in Pleasanton and feel that the rent stated by the buil ing owner is the best
deal they could find. The store is producing an income and they fi 1 that this would increase
in the downtown area.

~

Mr. Pelligrini stated they are concerned that the downtown merchan s are opposed to their
business. He felt Hope Hospice would be a good addition to the do town area and would
in fact bring in much needed customers. Their goal is to present an up-scale image and
show a better class of merchandise than other thrift stores. They pI to be an active part of
downtown planning and intend to support the Downtown Associatio .

Commissioner McGuirk questioned Mr. Pelligrini as to the donation they receive and what
happens to the items they do not display for sale. Mr. Pelligrini Sta ed all donations are
unsolicited; they do sort through everything they receive, and what i not kept by Hope
Hospice goes to other places where someone can use it.

Commissioner McGuirk asked why the present store is too small. r. Pelligrini stated they
are receiving more and more merchandise all the time and they sim y do not have room to
show it in an uncluttered fashion. As they are trying to continue wi an up-scale image they
need more room to display and advertise, along with the need for a ore comfortable fitting
room.

Commissioner McGuirk discussed the pictures that were presented t the Commission. He
questioned whether these pictures were taken of the present location r how it will look
downtown. Mr. Pelligrini stated the pictures represent the present I ation; he said the
future location will be still more attractive. He said they intend to p . nt the new location and
install glass shelving and new counters. He also noted they frequen y receive clothing with
Nordstroms and Sales Fifth Avenue labels and want to appropriately isplay it.

Commissioner McGuirk further questioned Mr. Pelligrini. Mr. Pelli rini felt that in the new
store downtown they would be better able to display their merchandi e. He thought they
would fit very nicely along with the other consignment shops in the owntown area, other
than the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store.

Commissioner Wright questioned the applicant as to the hours of 0 tion which are now
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The applicant r plied that staff is all
volunteers, with one paid manager; however, they have discussed th possibility of opening
on Sunday, if deemed necessary.

Planning Commission Minutes April 14, 1993

Page 3
