"~

Galen Grant, 611 W. Hawthorne Drive, Walnut Creek, project archi t with Jerry Loving
and Associates, stated that he has been heavily involved in the design of the project. He
briefly reviewed the sanctuary plan and the areas to be landscaped, n ting that this plan is
just a refmement of the original plan of several years ago. The plan howed the play area,
the lawn and green areas, and the eventual removal of the modular w ng. He pointed out
they plan to heavily landscape the perimeter of the site, in particular e area fronting the
neighboring homes.

Mr. Grant addressed Condition 8, stating they have no problem with andscaping the islands;
however, they would like to landscape the forward part of the parkin lot islands, but leave
the ones to the back of the lot for a playing area for their youth grou . He felt they have
addressed all the issues that have been brought up heretofore, and rested modification of
Condition 8. He thought they would have plenty of parking space, p 'cularly because the
church is intending to incorporate three different times for church se . ces.

Commissioner Wright asked Mr. Grant for further clarification as to hich islands he was
speaking of that they did not wish to landscape. Mr. Grant pointed e areas out on the
rendering.

,-.

Commissioner Michelotti noted that the Design Review Board had as ed that the landscaping
of those islands be done in three years. However, she understood M . Grant and Mr.
Nordin to indicate they would like to keep the back part of the parki lot open indefmitely
for outdoor play, but that they did agree to the Conditions of Approv at the Design Review
Board meeting and would abide by them, unless given permission by e Planning
Commission. Mr. Grant reiterated they would like to compromise b landscaping only the
end islands, but they do not want to make a huge issue out of it.

Chairman Hovingh was appreciative of the fact that the church had p ovided handicapped
parking spaces. Mr. Grant stated they have provided six handicap spaces.

Chairman Hovingh discussed the parking situation with Mr. Grant. e expressed some
concern that they might immediately need the spaces taken up by the slands for parking.
Mr. Grant indicated that 75 percent of the lot would be used up on S nday mornings; the
youth group would not be needing that area except on Tuesdays, W nesdays, and possibly
Friday evenings. He felt they would have plenty of parking space as planned.

Chairman Hovingh further discussed the school district's concern abo t the perceived threat
of baseballs coming from the school playgrounds and hitting the win ws on the east
elevation of the Core building. He asked whether those windows mi ht utilize shatter-
resistant material. Mr. Grant stated he did not think it was likely the church would have a
problem with balls coming over the fence. He felt that if the backst is properly designed,
there should be very few, if any balls coming over. He indicated sh tter-resistant material is
easily scratched and difficult to clean.

,--

Planning Commission Minutes
July 22, 1992

Page 3
