<br />~ Chairman Mahern asked Mr. Goldsworthy how reducing one of the units would affect the <br />cost of the remaining units. Mr. Goldsworthy replied that it would add 1/22 to the cost, but <br />could not give an estimate. <br /> <br />Commissioner McGuirk said he felt the carports were an expensive addition to the project, <br />and even though they would afford some protection in inclement w ther, was not sure that <br />they were necessary. Mr. Goldsworthy noted that staff suggested e idea of the carports; <br />the applicant did not think they are a necessary item. <br /> <br />Dan Gillian, 2441 Kilkare Road, Sunol, asked whether the plant <br />resistant. Commissioner Horan assured him that the Design Revie Board has a number of <br />landscape architects who scrutinize the landscape plan very careful y for drought resistant <br />landscaping. <br /> <br /> <br />n-space look of the <br /> <br />Commissioner Wright thought the carports might alleviate the long <br />parking lot. <br /> <br />Commissioner Horan thought some kind of covered parking would e feasible for loading <br />and unloading groceries, etc., by the residents. <br /> <br />Further discussion ensued regarding the carports and accompanyin <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />Norton Magoffin, 621 St. Mary Street, expressed concern that the <br />bogged down in details of the project. He said he has been a resi t of Pleasanton for a <br />great many years and was actually against any further developmen. He felt the Commission <br />had made some mistakes in approving certain projects and did not ant them to make one <br />here. He said all the public housing that he has seen is a mistake d that the downtown <br />would be cheapened if 22 units are built. He felt that 12 units mi ht be better. <br /> <br /> <br />Bruce Fiedler, Administrator for Pleasanton Gardens, expressed g t support for the project, <br />noting that this project is actually his competition. However, he 'd Pleasanton Gardens has <br />a waiting list of four years for seniors and that there is a special n for housing for seniors <br />whose income is lower than normal, but too high for Federal assis ceo It is very difficult <br />finding anything affordable for low income seniors, and he is ac ly suggesting that Fresno <br />is the nearest low income housing available for seniors. He said nior housing is a good <br />neighbor to have and in six-one-half years of being administrator e has not received a <br />complaint. He referred to an item in the staff report relating to king and said he felt the <br />parking is suitable as many seniors do not have cars. He felt the esign was well-done and <br />wished HUD housing had such good design. <br /> <br />Commissioner Horan questioned Mr. Fiedler about financial aid fi r low income seniors. <br />Mr. Fiedler noted there are a number of programs in place to assi t low income seniors; <br />Pleasanton Gardens, Kottinger Place, and Ridgeview Commons al have some type of <br />subsidized program in place. <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />Minutes Planning Commission <br />February 12, 1992 <br /> <br />Page 6 <br />
