pL£AS, NTON
o Staff Report

May 17, 2005
Fire Department

SUBJECT: Resolution to authorize used oil recycling block grant application

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

The California Oil Recycling Enhancement Act mandates the California
Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) to provide annual Block
Grants to local govemments for establishing local collection programs that
encourage recycling of used oil. Because the Block Grants are not
competitive, local govemments need to submit a completed application and
meet the program's eligibility requirements to receive a grant.

The City of Pleasanton meets the eligibility requirements for the Eleventh
Cycle Used Oil Recycling Block Grant application (three year cycle) for the
years 2005-2008. The completed application, due June 1, 2005, must be
accompanied by an authorizing resolution.

Staff recommends that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the City
Manager to submit the Block Grant application to the CIWMB for a 2005-
2008, Eleventh Cycle Used Oil Block Grant to receive funds for the three year
grant term.

SUMMARY:

Used Oil grant funds allow the City to assist citizens in properly disposing of
used oil and filters through activities such as establishment of collection
facilities and public outreach and education. This significantly reduces
contamination of the environment. The Eleventh cycle of funding will allow
the continuation of our efforts.

SR 05:118
