His <br /> current condition requires that he retire. <br /> <br /> As has been past practice, we need to transfer ownership and responsibility <br /> of Uno to a canine handler and purchase a veterinary insurance policy for <br /> future medical needs. <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council: <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Police Canine Uno has been in service in the Pleasanton Police Department for nine years and <br />has exceeded his expected working life. <br /> <br />During the past year, Uno's overall health and condition has declined due to age and injury. Hip <br />and degenerative nerve damage necessitates his retirement from police service. <br /> <br />It has been a long-standing practice to transfer ownership of retired canines to a qualified canine <br />handler and to purchase a medical insurance policy for future medical needs of the animal. The <br />cost of the insurance is nominal and it is recommended that this insurance coverage be provided <br /> <br />SR:05:110 <br /> <br /> <br />
