Z-95-170. Citv of Pleasanton
Application for design review approval for renovations to the Pleasanton Aquatic Center
at the northwest corner of Santa Rita Road and Black Avenue. The project includes
renovations to the existing bathhouse, addition of new men's and women's locker rooms
and showers, double the existing parking, and a new 50 meter pool to be used primarily
for lap swimming. Zoning for the property is A (Agriculture) District.

Mr. Iserson presented the staff report concerning the design review for the Aquatic Center in
Amador Community Park consisting of renovation of the existing bathhouse, the construction
of a new bathhouse and the construction of a new 50 meter pool.

The plans before the Commission are the refinements of the Master Plan for the Aquatic Center
approved by the City Council in May 1995. These plans will also be reviewed by the Parks and
Recreation Commission and then forwarded to the City Council.

The new pool facility will accommodate all aspects of the growing swimming community in
Pleasanton as well as provide competition facilities.

Mr. Iserson described the architecture and design of the building as well as the materials to be
used. A wave-like facade is incorporated in keeping with the aquatic theme. Staff feels the
design and colors of the building will not detract from the existing area buildings.

Parking in front of the center will be increased from 42 spaces to 150. The bermed area along
Black Avenue would be removed, and new trees would be installed. Parking would also be
increased on the west side of the center from 91 to 150 spaces if budget money is available. No
trees would have to be removed. Furthermore, swim competition overflow parking could be
accommodated at Alisal and Amador High School.

The staff aborist has indicated that the pine trees slated to be removed are in declining health.
Staff feels it is beneficial to remove the trees at this time before problems develop. They would
be replaced with London plane trees, Aristocrat pear trees and flowering cherry trees. All trees
would be 24" box size.

~

Planning Commission Minutes

Page 6

September 13, 1995
