Steven Bocian, Deputy City Manager, noted that Commissioner Sullivan's suggested change
_ may be confusing. Staff had the same idea but the sign consultant had explained that the arrows
on the sign had to be aligned vertically for better visibility.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED.
There were no speakers.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED.
Commissioner Maas moved to adopt a motion recommending PSDR-173 to the City
Council as conditioned in the staff report and subject to the conditions listed in Exhibit B.
Chairperson Roberts seconded the motion.
ROLL CALL VOTE
AYES: Commissioners Arkin, Fox, Maas, Roberts, and Sullivan
NOES: None.
ABSTAIN: None.
ABSENT: Commissioner Kameny.
Resolution No. PC-2004-11 was entered and adopted as motioned.
MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS
"Jack in the Box" and Shell Service Station Signs
Commissioner Arkin displayed the "Jack in the Box" site and pointed out that the restaurant sign
was too large and a very bright red. He noted that the Shell Service Station sign was also very
large, and he would like staff to take some action to correct the situation. He noted that the
existing signs did not match those that were approved by the Commission.
In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Sullivan on whether those signs could be replaced by
the owner, Mr. Iserson advised that staff would determine whether there were other sign criteria
that were more specific than the drawings. He advised that he would look into the matter and
report back to the Commission.
Commissioner Sullivan advised that he had received several very strong complaints.
Citv's Peer Review Consultant
Commissioner Maas noted that she did not want applicants and the City to rely too heavily on
Larry Cannon's peer review designs and encouraged applicants to be creative. She suggested
that staff consider using other peer reviewers in addition to Mr. Cannon.
Commissioner Sullivan noted that not all of Mr. Cannon's designs looked the same.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES January 28, 2004 Page 14 of 17
