number of lessons she could schedule. She advised that she would do her best to educate people that
they can't arrive early and must leave immediately following the lessons.

. PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED

Bruce Wetter, 2363 Leimert Boulevard, Oakland, stated that there is a real benefit to having swim
lessons in a back yard of a home. He noted his child had previously taken lessons at a pool in a large
environment, and that the lessons that Ms. Harpster has taught have been far more valuable. He also
stated that Ms. Harpster has done a good job of educating clients to be sensitive to the neighborhood
issues.

Amy Mouch, 8018 Dorothea Court, Pleasanton, stated that Ms. Harpster has been strict about getting
students in and out of the lessons in a timely way. She noted that Ms. Harpster has explained the
rules to her and that she is very serious about not disturbing the neighbors.

Deanna Ryan, 4491 Guilford Place, Livermore, stated that her child has arthritis and it is difficult to
find a warm pool, especially during the latter part of the year for her child to swim. She noted that
these lessons are very important for her child and that she will comply with all the rules and
conditions that have been set forth.

Becky Duret, 4318 2nd Street, stated that Ms. Harpster's lessons offer a level of flexibility that she
doesn't believe she could have found elsewhere.

.

Jeanette Banks, Vintage Hills area resident, stated that Ms. Harpster has instructed herself and her 20-
month old child. She stated that she would take her child to the lessons in a stroller if necessary.
She commented that she always found a parking space in the driveway when she arrived for lessons.

Stacy Bourg, 35936 Plumeria Way, Fremont, stated that as a working mother she appreciates the
flexibility that Ms. Harpster has provided with evening and Saturday classes.

Polly Clark, 3316 Hartwell Court, stated that she was present to support Ms. Harpster and that she
is also speaking on behalf of her in-laws, Chris and Carol Clark, who are Ms. Harpster's neighbors.
She reported that her daughter has done very well with Ms. Harpster's lessons. She also noted that
she has been told by her in-laws that when she visits their home she should park in their driveway
and not across the street.

Denise Hackett, Castro Valley, stated that she has known Ms. Harpster for fourteen years, and that
she has always worked well with children. She stated that there needs to be support for jobs where
women can work at home.

Elaine White, 6558 Hanover Court, spoke in support of Ms. Harpster and the flexibility her lessons
provide for scheduling.

Lynn Krilly, Pleasanton, stated that she has been advised of the rules. She noted that she likes the
flexibility to schedule lessons and that lessons in large pools in a community center environment were
not as successful.

.

Planning Commission Minutes

Page 3

September 10, 1997
