Due to the significant
acreage involved and the range of recreational facilities
desired, it was assumed that development of the Park would
be phased over time. It was further considered important to
create a master plan that would preliminarily determine the
desired future recreational facility needs and locate them in a
logically organized and phased scheme. Maintaining
flexibility to allow for future changes to meet evolving
community needs was, therefore, a high priority.

In December 2000, the Bernal Community Park Master Plan
Task Force was appointed by the Council to oversee
preparation of the Master Plan. Over the course of four years,
the Task Force participated in the creation of three different
master plan concepts, the most recent of which was
ultimately chosen as the “preferred plan” of the Council in
June, 2005.

In addition to assistance provided by the Task Force, the
Master Plan has also benefited from the 2004 Bernal Property
national design competition, as well as from input provided
by the City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission and
citizens of Pleasanton. It is also the result of direction
provided in the 2004 “Initiative to Save Our Community Park.”
