side of the Pleasanton Public Library entrance. Staff reviewed both location recommendations
from the Civic Arts and Library commissions. Due to the heavy use of the interior space, staff
found the outdoor location to be ideal. The outdoor location also provides visibility for visitors
and ample lighting at night, which would highlight the artwork and potentially reduce the risk of
vandalism.
The public artwork would be installed as a temporary piece due to its construction and value.
The estimated value of the piece is between $2,850-$3,600, as determined by the cost paid by
the Town of Danville and by the donor. With 46 permanent works in the City of Pleasanton’s
public art collection, the average value of each piece is $22,000, and permanent pieces are
constructed of materials designed for longevity and community use. The addition of the artwork
as a temporary installation is consistent with its intended design and use in the Town of
Danville, where it functioned as part of a temporary exhibition.
In accordance with the PMC process for gifts and loans of public art displayed in public places,
the City will secure documentation establishing the donor as the clear and unencumbered title
holder of the artwork and will obtain a release letter from the donor for the City to deaccess the
artwork in the future.

EQUITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
The public art program is dedicated to aligning art projects with available funding and
resources while ensuring that these projects reflect the diversity of the Pleasanton
community. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench appeals to a wide range of ages and
interests, making it a valuable addition that can be appreciated by visitors to the Pleasanton
Public Library.

OUTREACH
Staff received input and recommendations from the Civic Arts Commission and Library
Commission in developing this recommendation.

STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT
This action advances the ONE Pleasanton Citywide Strategic Plan goal of Investing in Our
Environment: Infrastructure, Public Facilities and Sustainability, Strategy 7 to continue to invest
in parks, bicycle, and pedestrian infrastructure, and public art.

FISCAL IMPACT
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench is a proposed donation to the City of Pleasanton by
Dorothy Broderson. Ms. Broderson would also pay for the cost of the plaque. City staff would
oversee the art installation, with labor costs estimated at $700 for the project. Maintenance will
be conducted only in the case of vandalism and would be funded through the City’s General
Fund for Maintenance and Conservation, funded by account 00150400-430107.
