The lobby location was the most viable, but there were concerns
about the access and visibility of the community information wall. The Children's section was
ruled out because of its heavy use by evening study groups, school classes, and family
activities. The library averages 800 visitors between 3:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. on school nights,
which are primarily students and families using tables and study spaces. A fixed structure in
the children's section could disrupt community use.
The two outdoor locations considered were on the west side of the as shown on Attachment 2.
The west side was dismissed due to after-school activity and lower visibility. The east side was
preferred for its better visibility, aesthetic placement, and direct illumination from a light pole,
which could potentially deter vandalism.
Commission Review
The Library Commission reviewed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench on August 1,
2024. With a 5-0 vote, the commission recommended the artwork be accepted by the City and
placed at the exterior of the Pleasanton Public Library on the west side of the entrance, with
consideration of the orientation of the bench so that the artwork on the back side of the bench
would be visible. The Library Commissioners felt that the interior location in the lobby would
obstruct the community information wall. While the children’s section would provide the best
aesthetic framing for the artwork, it is a busy public space, so the outdoor location was
preferred.
The Civic Arts Commission reviewed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench on August 5,
2024. A motion to recommend acceptance of the artwork by the City and place it at the
Pleasanton Public Library on the west side of the entrance did not pass with a tie vote of 4-4. A
new motion to recommend acceptance of the artwork by the City and place it at the Pleasanton
Public Library in an interior location to be selected by staff was subsequently approved by a 7-
1 vote. Civic Arts commissioners felt that an exterior location was inappropriate due to
concerns about the safety of the piece from vandalism and concerns about the piece's
aesthetics not aligning with the current public artwork. While the Civic Arts Commission
preferred an interior location, there was no recommendation for a specific space inside the
library.
Library Commission Recommendation
Accept the public artwork, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench, at the proposed outdoor
location with future possible changes in the orientation of the bench.
Civic Arts Commission Recommendation
Accept the public artwork, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench at the Pleasanton Library,
for an indoor location to be determined by staff.

DISCUSSION
Staff is recommending acceptance of the donation of the public artwork, The Wonderful Wizard
of Oz Book Bench. If accepted, the piece will be installed at an exterior location on the east
Page 7 of 46
