P24-0278, 2207 Martin Ave. Planning Commission
6 of 8
Figure 5: Nighttime Rendering (Text included by staff)

As a further benchmark, staff reviewed sports court design standards imposed by other
jurisdictions, including several Bay Area communities. While two of the communities surveyed
(Lafayette and Saratoga) prohibit lighted courts altogether, those that do permit them specify
maximum heights of between 12 feet (Palo Alto) and 20 feet (Dublin, Fremont, Mountain View,
and Rancho Mirage). As conditioned, the proposed tennis court lighting would be comparable
with, and with the exception of Palo Alto, below the standards imposed by other jurisdictions
(see table 1 below). It was noted by staff that several cities specify hours of use for sport -court
lighting. A condition of approval for the ADR limits the hours of operation for the lights to 7:00
a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. To further ensure that lights are not inadvertently left on beyond the
times specified, a condition of approval to implement a timer for automatic shut-off is also
included.

Table 1: Sports/Tennis Court Lighting Standards for Residential-Zoned Properties
Jurisdiction Lighting
Allowed
(Yes/No)
Maximum Lighting
Height in Feet
Lighting Hours Other Specific Lighting Regulations
City of Dublin Yes 20’ - • Downward Directed
• Not illuminate adjacent property
City of Lafayette No - - -
City of Fremont Yes 20’ Allowed during:
• Sunday – Thursday:
6am-11pm
• Friday & Saturday:
6am - midnight
• Max of eight lamps
• Warm white color temperature between
2,700 and 3,500 K,
• Not exceed more than one foot-candle at the
property line
• 2hr timer on lighting
Town of Los Gatos Yes Case-by-Case Not allowed after 10pm • Downward Directed & Shielded
• High-intensity lights are not permitted
City of Saratoga No - - -
City of Mountain
View
Yes 20’ - • Directed downward
• Only illuminate the court
City of Palo Alto Yes 12’ - • Shielded
• Lighting to not extend beyond the property
City of Rancho
Mirage
Yes 18’ with four poles &
20’ with three poles
Not allowed after 10pm • Directed downward
• Only illuminate the court
