Listed below are highlights of additional work performed by Parks staff during this
period:

Ken Mercer Sports Park:

• Parks staff removed three 60 ft. redwood trees in Phase 5 (east side) of the park
• Staff completed the renovation of the softball lips
• Staff assisted in locating and marking irrigation in preparation for the construction
of the cricket pitch. Staff periodically assisted the contractor by answering
questions about the irrigation and other park infrastructure items
• All fields were aerated and topdressed with compost twice. The first round was
done in September with solid core tines and the second round was done with
deeper hollow tines. Aeration helps mitigate the compact that accumulates over
the playing season. In total approximately 600 cubic yards of compost were
applied to the fields
• 160 cubic yards of infield mix were added to the ball fields
• Work began to remove 14 dead and declining redwood trees, 2 declining willow
trees, 5 declining Raywood ash trees, and 2 eucalyptus trees. Of the eucalyptus
trees, one was removed due to the presence of wood decay fungi, and one was
removed due to an excessive lean. The project, which included trees at Tennis
and Community Park, was competitively bid on with the project being awarded to
Best Quality Tree Care
• Zone 7 Water Agency began drilling a monitoring well in Phase 5 (east side)
parking lot. As part of the groundwater basin management, Zone 7 maintains a
groundwater monitoring network of over 200 wells. The wells are used to assess
groundwater elevations and monitor water quality. This location will act as an
early warning system to detect any per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
in the groundwater before they reach the adjacent drinking water supply wells.
The target total depth is 800 ft. The monitoring well is not for groundwater
production or pumping. When complete, only a small utility cover will be
observable in the parking lot.

Amador Valley Community Park:

• The area three crew completed field closure turf renovation work on the Amador
Park soccer fields. The crew deep-tine aerated, seeded, and topdressed the
soccer fields with compost
• The horseshoe pits were renovated
• Staff worked with youth volunteers to spread mulch in various planters and
around trees.

Val Vista Community Park:

• The Val Vista Community Park underdrain project continued during this summary
period and was completed in October. The focus of the project is to capture
recycled water draining from the sand base soccer fields and redirect it to the
