ASAN)" City Council Meeting - Submit
Submitted On:
m your written public comment Nov 6, 2023, 03:06PM PST
E. City of Pleasanton
AAEO
Full Name First Name: Mary
Last Name: Straus
Email (this entry is disclosable mstraus@comcast.net
if included)
City Council Meeting Date November 07, 2023
Agenda Item Number 17. Introduce an ordinance to add a new Chapter 9.06 Leaf Blower
Restrictions to the Municipal Code to ban gasoline-powered leaf
blowers effective June 1, 2024, and waive first reading.
Comments I support the proposed ban of gasoline-powered leaf blowers. I've
been hoping to see Pleasanton address this issue since learning
about the huge amount of pollution created by these unregulated
monstrosities. Atypical leaf blower burns just 60 percent of its fuel
—the rest is spewed into the atmosphere. The two-stroke gas
engines that power most leaf blowers is an antiquated technology
that has been phased out in nearly all areas—except yard work. In
2011, engineers at the car company Edmunds estimated that driving
a Ford F-150 Raptor truck from Texas to Alaska would emit the same
amount of air pollution as a mere half-hour of yard work with a two-
stroke, gas-powered leaf blower. Indeed, Edmunds estimated that
some gas leaf- blowers generate 23 times the carbon dioxide of the
Raptor and 300 times more non-methane hydrocarbons. More info at
https://kleinmanenergy.upenn.edu/news-ins ights/think-globally-on-
climate-act-locally-on-leaf-blowers/
A new report on the impacts of gas-powered lawn and garden
equipment in Massachusetts estimated the devices generated more
than 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide in 2020 — an amount equivalent
to the pollution from about 135,000 standard cars
(https://www.was hingtonpost.com/climate-s olutions/2023/11/05/leaf-
blowers-fall-environment-health/)
Please support the proposed ban on gasoline-powered leaf blowers
in Pleasanton.
