900 Main Street
DISCUSSION
A consolidation of newsracks in the downtown area is intended to enable more public
sidewalk space in the downtown area to ensure a clear and accessible path of travel,
enhance the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, and improve the appearance and
maintenance of the newsracks and the individual compartments.
To address this, staff is recommending the City Council adopt an ordinance
consolidating newsracks in the downtown which is defined as the boundary of the
Downtown Pleasanton Business Improvement District area. Under the proposed
ordinance, any entity that distributes publications in the downtown area will be required
to utilize City-owned newsracks to be located at 855 Main Street, 624 Main Street, and
400 Old Bernal Avenue for such distribution. These three locations place the newsracks
on property owned by the City.
The research conducted by staff regarding the purchase of newsracks revealed a
significant decline in the market for newsrack structures. Notably, the vendor initially
selected informed staff of its discontinuation of operations, such that it is unable to fulfill
newsrack orders-, however, it referred staff to another vendor. Staff has ascertained that
newsracks are still available for purchase, but they will be provided in a style similar to
the structure depicted in the image below. To ensure the newsracks harmonize with the
downtown streetscape, they will be painted in the same 'Pleasanton green' color as
other fixtures in the downtown area, such as bicycle racks and light poles. The lead time
for the delivery of these newsracks, once they are purchased, is estimated to be
approximately six weeks.
Page •1 of e
