3
THE CITY OF
-- -• # :77ir"" CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
PLEASANTON
November 7, 2023
City Attorney
City Manager
TITLE: INTRODUCE AND WAIVE FIRST READING OF AN ORDINANCE
AMENDING CHAPTER 6.28 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING
CONSOLIDATION OF NEWSRACKS LOCATED IN THE PLEASANTON
DOWNTOWN AREA
SUMMARY
Currently, there are five freestanding newsracks located along Main Street in the
Pleasanton downtown area, located at 201 Main Street, 300 Main Street, 624 Main
Street, 855 Main Street, and 900 Main Street. For each of these, the City owns the
newsrack, while individual media companies own, manage and service the
compartment that is inserted into the newsrack. Over the many years the newsracks
have been in place, these compartments have not been maintained or kept in good
repair by the servicer, leaving them riddled with clutter, debris, dust, and broken
windows. To address this, staff is recommending the City Council adopt an ordinance
consolidating newsracks in the downtown area into three City-owned newsracks to be
located at 201 Main Street, 624 Main Street and 400 Old Bernal Avenue, on property
owned by the City.
RECOMMENDATION
Introduce and waive first reading of an ordinance amending chapter 6.28 of the
Municipal Code regarding consolidation of newsracks located in the Pleasanton
downtown area.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The purchase of three new newsracks is estimated to be approximately $16,000; this
would be allocated from the Downtown Beautification Fund. The cost of demolishing the
existing newsracks, installation of the new newsracks, and clean up and restoration of
the ground removal will be absorbed by the Public Works Department's fiscal year
budget. As well, routine cleaning and upkeep of the new newsracks will be incorporated
into the City's regular downtown maintenance activities.
Page of
