Healo.City Council,
read about a move and survey to narrow our main artery on Las Positas to accomodate permanent
bike lanes.
There are some serious problems with this proposal.
• We are not in Southern California. Based on current weather, we cannot bike for 6 to 7
months due to rain, wind and cold
• Number of bikers (majority are for leisure or kids/youth) are less to justify permanent
giving away of road lanes, with the project cost subsidized by rest of city's working class
taxpayers. We cannot rob Peter to pay Paul, but city is doing that by taking away car
lanes.
• There are already bike lanes on Las Positas to help those who need them. This plan
doesnt show the impact Iron horse trail walk signal on Las Positas after Owens drive,
where cars are suddenly halted for walkers. There is a small pile up of cars in morning
even today and the impact will be worse , once we give away lanes
• The Pleasanton Meadows will be severely affected as the 2 lanes going straight on Las
Positas to cross Santa Rita will be made one (front of fire station). There is already a
traffic, bottleneck today in mornings due to parents dropping kids to Fairlands elementary
school and people going to work. Also the expectation is that bike lanes will 'improve'
traffic as it will encourage parents to send their young kids on bikes from apartments on
Owens etc across Santa Rita to Fairlands school. It is not correct as it will be dangerous
for young school kids to bike in winter, cold, rain with slippery roads from Dec to May.
Many parents also need to drive to drop their younger kids and go to work.
I dont see why you want to deliberately make it worse for parents, to drop their young
kids in the safety of their car.
If you want to help, you need to put a school bus from across Santa Rita for kids for
Fairlands, not make it difficult for parents to drop kids.
Removing car lanes for permanent bike lanes causes traffic congestion in winter and
rains, slows down movements and eventually hurts small businesses like pizza and food
11
