Based on the City Council's direction, two conceptual plans were designed: one with the
bandstand located on the park's north side, and the other with the bandstand remaining
near the current location. It is anticipated that either concept can be constructed for the
available budget. The two conceptual plans focus on constructing items identified as
priorities based on the public outreach process and direction of the City Council. These
items include:
• Reconstruct the bandstand
• Retain and or add as much lawn area as possible
• Retain and add shade trees
• Add seating and picnic areas.
Bandstand
City Staff evaluated various locations for the bandstand prior to focusing on the two
options presented in this report; each was evaluated based on concerns related to the
priorities for the parks as identified during the public outreach process.
The concept plans show three style options for the bandstand, ranging from a more
traditional bandstand that complements the traditional craftsman and Victorian-style
homes on First and Second Streets (Style Option B to a more modern bandstand that
complements the modern style of the Firehouse Arts Center (Style Option A). A third
style option that balances modern and traditional, which complements the "Pleasanton"
sign on Main Street, is also shown (Style Option C). Each bandstand would incorporate
traditional features of the parks and the Firehouse Arts Center, with a nod to the history
of the bandstand by incorporating the historic bandstand plaques into the design,
including bricks as in the transportation corridor and the Firehouse Arts Center, and
adding wood elements to complement the Firehouse Arts Center and bring in some of
the character of the previous bandstand.
The two developed concept plans focus on the bandstand's location and how it impacts
the park. Each concept includes a few alternative amenities and focuses on improving
Lions Wayside Park because the public prioritized that park. Either concept will require
modifications of the irrigation system and turf replacement. Delucchi Park improvements
include updated vegetation around the restroom to improve visibility of the area and a
decomposed granite pathway to Lions Wayside Park. Depending on the location of the
bandstand, the dance floor area is shown in front of the bandstand (Concept A, shown
in Attachment 1) or more to the side (Concept B, shown in Attachment 2), and in both
concepts is larger than the existing dance area. Each design includes vehicular and
ADA access to the bandstand for the bands, and the bandstand is sized to
accommodate the Pleasanton Community Concert Band.
Concept A
This option locates the bandstand on the north side of Lions Wayside Park, with
excellent access to the bandstand for events. It also maximizes the lawn area
(approximately 26,650 square feet) for concert viewing near the bandstand, provides a
better connection to the Firehouse Arts Center, and allows the Firehouse Arts Center
Plaza to be incorporated as a prime location for concert viewing by converting the no-
Page 5 of 9
