ATTACHMENT 1
DOWNTOWN
ASSOCIATION
October 6, 2023
Dear Mayor Brown and Pleasanton City Council Members,
On behalf of the Pleasanton Downtown Association Board of Directors, thank you for the
opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the staff recommendations for the Lions Wayside and
Delucchi Park renovations and provide our input. We understand that time is of the essence as
the community has been awaiting these park improvements for many years and our
organization does not want to add any delay to this process. To this end, we will not provide
feedback on the overall park layout or design. We know these are highly subjective decisions
and thoughtful comment has already been provided to you by the Park and Recreation
Commission. We would, however, like to comment on a few items we believe have been
overlooked in the most recent design proposal.
For many years we have collectively discussed the desire to expand our Saturday morning
Farmers Market into Delucchi Park in order to add more vendors and more programming to our
market. City staff has told us that in order to do so pavers would need to be added to Delucchi
Park to preserve the lawn from the wear and tear of the booths and foot traffic. We strongly
encourage this element to be added to the plans as the park improvements move forward. This
is a minor adjustment but something that will increase the functionality of Delucchi Park and
address a strong demand from our community.
One goal of the 2014 Lions Wayside and Delucchi Park Master Plan was to create an Eastern
gateway into Downtown Pleasanton that would welcome our residents and guests. First Street
is a highly traveled road and the entrance at Neal Street is a major thoroughfare into
Downtown. Previous designs have included monument signs, planters and other elements to
create a beautiful entrance. We ask that the importance of this gateway be reconsidered, and
these elements be added to the current plans.
Convenient public parking continues to be an issue for our businesses in Downtown. As Phase 2
begins we ask that strong consideration be given to maximizing any and all opportunities for
increased public parking around Lions Wayside.
