In my current company, our Chairman, who has been on the Board since the founding of the company, was a cofounder
of National Semi, he was Steve Job's first VP of Marketing and Sales, and he served two terms under"W" Bush as the Co-
Chairman of the President's Council of Science and Technology, and he had an office in the Whitehouse for eight
years. When he was a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, he invested in companies like Amazon,
Google and Sun Microsystems. He is a Silicon Valley icon, fabulously successful, very humble, and most importantly has
been an invaluable leader and advisor to me as CEO of my company.
The reason I bring all this up is that when my Chairman gave a commencement speech to one of the Berkeley
Engineering graduating classes, in his speech he said it was not only those entrepreneurs who could start a company and
make a budget plan that were successful. He added that the exceptionally successful entrepreneurs were the ones who
could strive toward the strategic vision in their original business plan, but were also able to "think out of box" when Plan
A, Plan B or Plan ... did not work and they had the tenacity, ingenuity, flexibility and desire to develop alternative plans
to achieve that exceptional success.
Here is the reason, I am explaining this to you. The citizens of Pleasanton elected you as mayor and the council
members not just to do your 2023/24 and 2024/25 budget as planned. Our chairman said the plans and budgets were
only the starting point. The challenge for you and the City Council is to be able to work toward the City's strategic vision
with what I consider a risky financial plan and budget. For success, it requires that you work with each other as a team
in spite of any differences and with that approach it will ultimately make for a stronger outcome. To be able to revise
the City budget and develop the iterations of plans required and still achieve the City's ultimate vision and goals are the
challenge you,the City Council and City Management face. As a citizen of Pleasanton, this is the expectation of
performance and success I have for you and your team.
I hope this helps you understand why I took the time to analyze and challenge your budget.
Respectfully,
Ted Fong
Resident
Pleasanton, CA 94SFr,
From: Ted Fong f
Sent: Friday, June 2, 2023 10:57 PM
To: 'citycouncil@cityofpleasantonca.gov'
Cc: 'gbeaudin@cityofpleasantonca.gov'; 'eclark@cityofpleasantonca.gov'; 'Contact@ IetsmakeCAWork.com'; 'Harriet Fong'
Subject: Pleasanton Two-Year Budget Approval
Ms. Karla Brown
Mayor, City of Pleasanton
Email: citycouncil@citvofpleasantonca.gov
Dear Mayor Brown,
• Thank you for taking the time to read my email.
• I live in The Village at Ironwood and recently got involved because of my concerns about the Arroyo
Lago ("AL") housing development behind our east wall.
