For renters, housing cost is gross rent (contract rent plus utilities). <br />For owners, housing cost is “select monthly owner costs”, which includes mortgage payment, utilities, association fees, insurance, <br />and real estate taxes. HUD defines cost-burdened households as those whose monthly housing costs exceed 30% of monthly <br />income, while severely cost-burdened households are those whose monthly housing costs exceed 50% of monthly income. For the <br />purposes of this graph, the “Hispanic or Latinx” racial/ethnic group represents those who identify as having Hispanic/Latinx ethnicity <br />and may also be members of any racial group. The higher costs required for homes with multiple bedrooms can <br />result in larger families experiencing a disproportionate cost burden than the rest of the population <br />and can increase the risk of housing insecurity. <br />Larger families in Pleasanton are not significantly more likely to be cost burdened than all other <br />household types. In Pleasanton, 16.2 percent of large family households experience a cost <br />burden of 30 to 50 percent, while 7.1 percent of households spend more than half of their income <br />on housing.
